A series of clear, removable plastic aligners can be used to straighten your teeth without metal wires or brackets. As you replace each aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will move, little by little, week by week, until they have straightened to the final position your orthodontist has prescribed. Sequential plastic aligners can align teeth but they cannot yet correct significant bite discrepancies. They are considerably more expensive than fixed appliances (braces), which remain the most effective and controlled way of moving teeth.
Braces work by gently pressing on your teeth over time and moving them into their desired positions. They are beneficial to both adults and children alike and consist of the following components:
Functional appliances are devices used to correct a significant disharmony in the relationship between the upper and lower jaws. They work by influencing the growth and development of a growing patient. The most common use of a functional appliance is to encourage the forward growth of a retrusive or under-developed lower jaw. The functional appliance holds the lower jaw forward over a period until the teeth, jaws, and joints have adapted and the desired jaw position has been obtained.
At the completion of active orthodontic treatment, the braces are removed and retaining appliances (retainers) are fitted to hold the teeth steady in their new position. These appliances may be removable plates or wires fitted behind the teeth. Retainers play an important role in orthodontic treatment because, if they are not worn according to instructions, the teeth are likely to move back toward their original position. There are many types of retainers and just about as many sets of instructions on when to wear them. The important thing is that retainers must be worn frequently enough and for long enough to keep them fitting comfortably.
The best age for children to begin orthodontic treatment varies depending on their individual needs. However, it is essential that a child has lost all baby teeth and has secondary teeth prior to the beginning of treatment.
We have treated many adults in our practice and we cater to the specific needs of our adult patients. Adults may require a longer treatment time than children or adolescents because they have denser bone structure. However, the results are just as effective. It's true that you are never too old for braces!
